1. Big Sur Lodge

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is named after John Pfeiffer and his wife Florence, who lived in their home on the north bank of the Big Sur River since 1884. Several Big Sur landmarks are named after Pfeiffer family descendants. The Piper family cannot make a living from farming, ranching, and lumbering. John was very friendly and invited people to stay for a few days, but he didn’t expect them to pay for board and lodging. Piper became more pleasant, and as more and more visitors came and stayed, Florence grew impatient. One day, Florence said, one of Piper’s men broke into the house. “From now on, every time I stop here, I think every horse, every bed, and every meal will be helpful. The home-cooked meals and simple accommodations in Florence captured the family’s heart, and the couple’s attention was drawn to the natural beauty surrounding the inn and the peaceful atmosphere. But in 1933, Pfeiffer sold 700 acres to the state of California and called them a new home, “John and Florence. Big Sur Lodge continues its tradition of hospitality, excellent service, and appreciation for its guests.
